Proposal: Make All Free Towns Fully Free
Summary
This proposal recommends removing the $1 per member protocol fee that applied to free Towns once they exceeded 100 members.
With this change, all free Towns will remain fully free for all members, regardless of size.
Rationale
The original fee was introduced to mitigate bot activity and spam in large free groups, especially during high-reward periods such as the initial airdrop campaign.
Now that the major airdrop has concluded, overall bot activity has decreased significantly.
With stronger verification tools and fewer incentives for spam, this fee is no longer necessary. Removing it supports the protocol’s mission to make Towns the most accessible platform for creating and growing communities.
This change will:
-
Remove all financial barriers for large free Towns.
-
Encourage more organic community growth and experimentation.
-
Simplify the user experience by eliminating per-member fees.
Impact
The $1 per member fee for free Towns exceeding 100 members will be permanently removed.
All free Towns will now be fully free to create and grow, helping increase participation and community diversity across the network.
Implementation
If approved, the change will take effect in the next protocol update.
